Summer Training Blog: Hamilton Southeastern's Gabe Fendel


WEEK 7 (Aug. 26-Sept. 1)

One of the top returning cross country talents in the nation is Hamilton Southeastern (Indiana) High rising senior Gabe Fendel, who finished 12th at Foot Locker Nationals and 28th at NXN in 2016. Fendel is already in full swing with training and is coming off a trip to Portland, Oregon, for the Nike Elite Camp, which hosted over a handful of the top distance running talent in the nation. WEEKLY MILEAGE: 52

Sunday: 9 miles at 6:45 pace

This was just an easy medium day.

Monday: 3 miles at 7:00 pace

Today was an easy recovery before the race tomorrow.

Tuesday: RACE DAY -- 9 miles 

I ran 15:14 for the 5K and my legs didn't feel amazing, but it's still early in the season so I'm not too worried.

Wednesday: 9 miles at 6:25 pace

I felt really good today!

Thursday: 4 miles at 6:50 pace

This was a recovery day after a few hard ones.

Friday: 9 miles

This was an early morning workout before school, with 5 sets of 4x400 

  • 1st set start at 73 seconds just to warm up
  • 2nd set I was hitting 70s
  • 3rd set was around 68-69s
  • 4th set I was hitting 66s
  • 5th set was 65s and my last rep was a 62
Saturday: 9 miles easy at 6:40 pace

Went out just to loosen up my legs after yesterdays workout. 

Note: In the coming days, Fendel is planning a visit to the University of Wisconsin.
