Track & Field Places Second At BG Opener

   BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - - Thanks in part to a strong effort in the field events, the Ball State indoor track & field team placed second among the five teams at Saturday's BG Opener at Bowling Green's Perry Fieldhouse.

   The Cardinals earned wins in three of the six field events at the meet, including a pair of 1-2 finishes. Overall, Ball State won four of the 16 events to finish the day with 111 total points.

   Western Michigan won the meet for the fourth consecutive season with 171 points, followed by BSU, Toledo (90), Bowling Green (89) and IPFW (27).

   In addition to the four event victories, Ball State's student-athletes also racked up 17 career-best efforts over the course of the meet.

   The Cardinals' first event victory of the day came in the long jump, with redshirt sophomore Christina Crawford (Belleville, Mich./Romulus) posting a career-best leap of 18'-10" (5.74m) to out-distance freshman teammate Makelle Skelton (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) who earned second with a career-best effort of her own at 17'-9.75 (5.43m).

   Crawford would also post a career-best time in the 60m dash, as she placed third overall with a finals effort of 7.88.

   Redshirt junior Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) recorded her second win of the season in the high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 5'-5" (1.65m) on her first attempt. Junior Haley Austin (Avon, Ind./Avon) followed in second place, for the second consecutive meet, by clearing the same height on her second attempt.

      Both Crawford and Lomax would go on to post a career-best times in the 60m dash, with Crawford placing third in the event with a personal-best effort of 7.88 in the finals and Lomax earning fifth after clocking a career-best time of 7.86 in the prelims.

   Rounding out Ball State's field event winners was junior Hannah Ciasto-Poor (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) who place first overall in the pole vault by clearing 11'-5.75" (3.50m).

   The Cardinals final event win of the day came in the meet's first running event, when junior Courtney Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) clocked in at 18:29.52. Her twin sister Caitlynn Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) finished in second with a career-fast time of 19:01.39.

   The Ball State indoor track & field team returns to action next Saturday, when it travels to Marion, Ind., for the Indiana Wesleyan University Invitational which is slated to start at noon.
