Nick Boyce claimed two individual titles to earn Men's Track Athlete of the Year and help Wabash capture the first Indiana DIII Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday afternoon.
The Little Giants scored a total of 355 points to cruise to the men's team title. Franklin, the host school, finished a distant second with a score of 120.5 points, followed by Manchester (82.5), Rose-Hulman (70.5), Anderson (52), Hanover (48), DePauw (31.5), and Earlham (10).
Boyce won the 5000-meter run and the 3000-meter steeplechase as part of a commanding effort by the Little Giant distance runners. The sophomore won the 5,000 with a time of 15:16.27, with teammate
Billy McManus crossing the finish line in 15:21.30 to finish second.
Adam Togami took fourth place (15:26.66), while
Shane Hoerbert finished fifth (15:29.47), and
Jared Burris took sixth place (15:37.49). Matt Avanatti added the final team point in the event with an eight-place finish (15:55.64.
Boyce crossed the finish line in 9:56.38 in the steeplechase to win that event. Togami took second place (9:56.42), while Avanatti finished fourth (10:12.86).
Ronnie Posthauer popped off another quick time to win the 110-meter hurdles. The sophomore trimmed 5/100th of a second off his best time of the year, winning the event with a time of 14.46 to maintain the second-quickest national time among DIII runners.
Nathan Mueller took third place in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.85, the 11th-quickest time among DIII runners this year. Matt Dickerson grabbed fourth place (15.08), while
Adam Wadlington finished sixth (15.19).
Joel Whittington was seventh overall (15.62).
Whittington picked up his own individual title in the 400-meter hurdles, winning the race with a time of54.84. Mueller crossed the line in 57.50 to finish in fourth place, just ahead of teammate
Billy Rosson in fifth place (57.79). Dickerson was seventh overall (58.40).
John Haley finished first in the 400-meter dash by turning in a time of 50.14.
Joey Conti was just off that mark, earning second place with a time of 50.15.
Chet Riddle took fourth place (51.02), while
Chris Stazinski finished sixth (51.32).
Dalton Boyer won the 10,000-meter run by edging Hoerbert at the finish line. Boyer crossed in 33:16.08, while Hoerbert was credited with a time of 33:16.09. McManus was right there as well, taking third place with a time of 33:16.11. Burris was an eyelash behind in fourth place (33:16.17), while
Jared Santana grabbed eighth place (34:51.07.
Matt Knox cleared 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5.25 inches) to win the pole vault.
Jackson Reid tied for fourth place with a height of 3.95 meters (12 feet, 11.50 inches), while
Wesley Adams took sixth place (3.80 meters; 12 feet, 5.50 inches).
Joel Beier won the shot put with a mark of 15.44 meters (50 feet, 8 inches) to beat out teammate
Derek De St Jean in second place (15.05 meters; 49 feet, 4.50 inches).
Joe Granger finished eighth overall (12.79 meters; 51 feet, 11.50 inches). De St Jean captured the discus title with a mark of 44.60 meters (146 feet, 4 inches), with Beier taking second (43.27 meters; 141 feet, 11 inches). De St Jean was third in the hammer throw (48.78 meters; 160 feet), while Beier grabbed fourth place (43.40 meters; 142 feet, 5 inches).
Evan Groninger and
Kenton Armbruster went 1-2 in the javelin throw. Groninger won the event with a toss of 53.23 meters (174. feet, 8 inches), while Armbruster was second with a mark of 53.02 meters (173 feet, 11 inches). Bryan Tippman scored a sixth-place finish by posting a mark of 42.84 meters (140 feet, 7 inches).
James Kervan won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.35.
Cole Hruskovich finished second, crossing the line in 1:57.58.
Fabian House earned a fourth-place finish (1:59.34), while
Zach Huston took fifth place (1:59.61).
Sean Lewis finished seventh (2:01.12).
House added a second-place finish in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:13.32.
Zach Mahone was fifth overall (4:19.29), with
Jacob Caddick capturing sixth place (4:21.88), and
Zach Vega adding an eighth-place finish (4:24.34).
Sean Hildebrand took second place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.00.
Alfred Sambo finished sixth (11.32). Haley scored a second--place finish in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 22.24. Hildebrand finished third (22.30), while Riddle was sixth (22.70), Stazinski seventh (22.79), and Conti eighth (22.84).
Mueller picked up a third-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.57 meters (21 feet, 6.75 inches). Dickerson finished seventh with a leap of 6.23 meters (20 feet, 5.25 inches).
Vann Hunt was fifth in the triple jump (12.39 meters; 40 feet, 7.75 inches), while Wadlington took sixth place (12.32 meters; 40 feet, 5 inches).
Kris Nickle finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.83 meters (6 feet). Dickerson was eighth with a height of 1.78 meters (5 feet, 10 inches).
Derek Rowe, Sambo, Hildebrand, and
Charles Smothers combined to finish second in the 4x100-meter relay, touring the oval in 43.47. The Wabash team of Kervan, Rosson, Huston, and Stazinski finished fourth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:29.97).
