Matt McClintock World Jr XC Blog #3

Greetings Bydgoszcz, Poland!

Well after a long day of traveling we finally got to Bydgoszcz (pronounce Bid-Goshch).  The trip involved an hour plane ride from Indianapolis to Chicago, and 8hr flight from Chicago to Copenhagen, Denmark.  Followed by another hour flight from Copenhagen to Gdansk (pronounce Guh-Dansk), Poland, rounded off with a 2.5 hour drive from the Gdansk airport to our hotel in Bydgoszcz.  The trip wasn’t as bad as I expected, however the time change was quite something to get used to.  I woke up this morning at 7:00A.M Polish time and that equates to 2:00A.M Eastern U.S time!

At the hotel I am rooming with Malachy Schrobilgen who is a fellow runner in the Big Ten, running for the University of Wisconsin.  I guess we’ll be sharing some interesting duels over the next few years!

This first day I really did very little.  Once at the hotel I quickly went and got in a quick 20 minute shakeout run with some of the other junior guys.  By this time it was a little past seven o’clock and we were all hungry and exhausted, so we went and had dinner in the hotel restaurant.  When Malachy and I walked in we were quickly called over by Chris Derek, the U.S. National XC Champ, and Elliot Heath, 4th at the U.S. Championships, who let us sit down and join them!  We were quickly joined by Ryan Veil who was 6th at the U.S. Championships.  It was quite the experience to sit with these three very accomplished professional runners for a couple hours and share some laughs, it really gave me a sense of what I want to be in the coming years.

So that was really all of my first day.  It was basically all travel.  Hopefully I will have some more to tell you when I send out my blog post for Thursday.  Anywho, thanks for the support everyone!
