Matt McClintock World Jr XC Blog

Hi Everyone!

So whether you’ve heard or not my name is Matt McClintock and I’m going to be blogging for MaineTrackXC about my upcoming trip to the IAAF World XC Championships in Poland.  I kind of just want to take this first post and introduce myself.  I’m sure there are many of you who have no clue who I am.  Oh the life of a runner!

So as I said before, my name is Matt McClintock.  I am currently in my second semester at Purdue University majoring in Movement and Sports Science.  I graduated in 2012 from Madison Area Memorial High School, but I was born and raised in little ol’ Athens, ME.  I like to run, play guitar, hang out with my friends and there really isn’t much else.

From a running standpoint I was a multiple time State Class C Champion in cross country and track and field for Madison.  My senior year of high school I qualified to travel to San Diego where I was lucky enough to become and 3rd team All-American at the famed Footlocker Cross Country Championships.  In track I set class c state meet records in both the 1600m (4:16.40) and 3200m (9:16.92) and won the 3200m New England Championship in 2012.

For all of my high school success I was lucky enough to be recruited to Purdue University where I compete on the cross country and track teams.  Since coming into college I have really developed a love, or maybe you could say addiction, for running.  Through hard work and the help of my coaches Lonnie Greene and Dave Hartman I became Purdue’s first male to be named the Big Ten Cross Country Freshman of the year, as well as qualifying for the NCAA Division 1 cross country championships.  Indoor I ran PR’s of 8:07.06 for 3000m (2nd in Purdue history) and 14:18.95 for 5000m (3rd in Purdue history).

On February 2nd my teammate Tate Schienbein and I competed in the US Junior Cross Country Championships.  From this race, the top 6 finishers qualify for the US Junior National Cross Country Team to compete in Poland on March 24 in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.  In a race that was slow until the final kilometer I was able to kick my way to a 3rd place finish and a spot on my first US National Team!

I’m really not sure what else to discuss in the first blog.  At the present time I have just finished up with the indoor track season and am training for the World Cross Country Championships.  The really fun stuff to read will come after March 19 when we in Poland.  I feel blessed to be able to have the experiences I am having in college.  Hard work and determination really do payoff!  With that, I guess if anyone has any questions you can hit me up on facebook or twitter (@RunMattRun11).  I love talking with fellow runners and especially younger runners looking to advance themselves in this wonderful sport.  Be sure to look out for my next post!

Thanks for reading everyone!!!
