INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI soccer student-athletes Jamie Farrell and Eric Weigman have been named the 2009-10 Melvyn Garland Distinguished Student-Athlete award winners as the athletics department announced its major award winners on Sunday. In addition, Weigman was named the Jaguars Athletics Club Academic Achievement Award honoree and cross country runners Jennie Jamicich and Michelle Williams shared the Dorothy Cheesman Award.

All of the honorees were recognized at the Senior Brunch, held at the University Place Hotel & Conference Center on Sunday morning.

The Mel Garland Awards are the highest single honors given to a male and female senior student-athlete. Garland represented the embodiment of all that is best in IUPUI athletics with the winners being chosen based on athletic achievement, scholarship, mental attitude, leadership and perseverance.

Farrell was named the women’s recipient of the Garland Award after completing an outstanding four-year career with the women’s soccer program. The 5-foot-6 goalkeeper was a four-year starter in net and finished as the school record holder in nearly every goalkeeping category. She ranks among The Summit League’s career leaders in saves (394), games started (72) and shutouts (21.0) and was named First Team All-Summit this past season. She finished her career on a high note, earning Summit League Tournament MVP honors as the Jaguars beat both North Dakota State and South Dakota State to clinch the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. The past two years, Farrell spearheaded back-to-back school record win totals including 17 victories in 2009. Academically, Farrell has compiled a 3.27 grade point average and will earn her degree from the Kelley School of Business.

Weigman was the male recipient of the Garland Award after an equally impressive four-year career with the men’s soccer program. The 5-foot-9 forward made 73 career appearances, starting 64 times including every appearance of his final three seasons. He was a two-time Second Team All-Summit League selection and three-time Academic All-District 5 pick. This past season, he earned Second Team Lowe’s SENIOR Class All-America honors and was one of 10 finalists for the national award. He completed his career with 15 goals and 11 assists while his 41 points place him tenth on IUPUI’s career list. With Weigman helping lead the way, the Jaguars clinched a spot in the four-team league tournament all four seasons including reaching the finals in 2007.

Weigman was also honored with the Jaguars Athletics Club Academic Achievement Award which annually recognizes the top senior male student-athlete, based on academic prowess. The Wisconsin-native owns a 3.87 GPA and will graduate with a degree in finance from the Kelley School of Business. Weigman has been on the IUPUI Academic Advisor’s List every semester of his career and is a four-time Academic All-League honoree. He’s also earned Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence twice in his IUPUI career. He’s the first men’s soccer student-athlete in school history to earn three consecutive Academic All-District honors and became IUPUI’s first-ever Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award finalist.

Jamicich and Williams shared the Dorothy Cheesman Award, which annually recognizes the top senior female student-athlete, based on academic prowess. The award is named after a longtime staffer in the IUPUI Admissions office who was a staunch supporter of the athletics program.

Jamicich has a 3.87 GPA and will earn her degree in psychology. She was also on the IUPUI Academic Advisor’s List every semester and was a four-time Academic All-League honoree. She was recognized on the School of Science Scholar’s List four times and earned the School of Science David E. White Memorial Award in 2007. In addition, she was a Hoosier Presidential Scholar and has been on The Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence twice in her career.

Williams has a 3.89 GPA and will earn her degree in respiratory therapy. Like Jamicich, she was also on the IUPUI Academic Advisor’s List every semester and was a three-time Academic All-League honoree. She’s been on the Health Professions Programs Dean’s List three times and was awarded the IUPUI Academic Excellence Scholarship. She’s a two-time Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence honoree as well.
