WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - IUPUI runners had to battle through rain and lightning as both the men's and women's teams took the track at the Mike Poehlein Invitational hosted by Purdue at the Rankin Track and Field on Saturday afternoon. Both teams had runners entered in the 5,000 meter races and were running for the first time since mid-February.
In the women's race, freshman
Rachel Zajac showed strong, taking fifth among 27 runners in a time of 18:11.23 and junior
Brittney McDuffee was 11th, crossing at 18:32.87. Senior
Jennie Jamicich came in with a time of 19:07.23 and freshman
Rebecca Downs finished the race in 19:10.10.
Senior
Michelle Williams rounded out the Jaguars' entries in a time of 20:37.65.
Notre Dame's Theresa Cattuna dominated the run, spanning the event in a time of 17:11.11. Her time was more than 26 seconds better than her closest competition.
The men's race followed and it was junior
Aaron Kremer that led six IUPUI entries to the finish line. The Indianapolis-native placed fifth of 34 runners in a time of 15:09.18 and freshman #J.D. Smith# took eighth at 15:15.63.

Joe Hoffman placed 12th at 15:33.60 and Head Coach
Chuck Koeppen had three freshmen cap his entrants.
Matt Farkas ran a 15:48.37,
Tyler Proctor posted 16:34.11 and
Kyle Schwartz finished at 16:57.08.
Purdue's Caden Shields won the race in a time of 14:35.47, bettering the field by nearly 13 seconds.
The IUPUI runners will return to action on April 10 when both teams take part in the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.
