2016 Marks the First Year Girls In All States Will Race The Same Distance As Boys

In 2013, nine states (Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, and Oklahoma) still contested shorter cross country courses for girls. But in the past three years, a lot has changed.  The fall of 2016 will be the first cross country season in which girls in every single state will race the same distance as the boys.

With the exception of small schools in Texas and Oklahoma, which will continue to have girls run two-mile courses to maintain participation levels, all 50 states will host 5K races for both girls and boys. The final state to declare this was North Dakota.

Note: Collegiate women will continue to race the 6K, while men race the 8K/10K.
